Ron's research centers on:

  • Developing and applying commercial robots to field manufacturing and construction environments such as buildings, highways, and shipyards
  • Applying commercial sensors to gather information in these environments
  • Methods and computer architectures to capture, store and reuse human knowledge
  • Knowledge-based planning software integrated with computer-based modeling in order to perform complex tasks with robots
  • Architectures to solve complex problems requiring measuring and sensing in dynamic environments
  • Integration of complete robot systems to perform difficult tasks.

Over the past 30 years, Ron led the delivery over 400 complex robotic systems to a wide range of domestic and overseas manufacturers. Recent robot projects under Ron's direction included: multiple robot installations that manipulate, measure, mark, and cut one-of-a-kind structural beams for shipbuilding; automated robotic welding of one-of-a-kind ship panels direct from shipyard CAD data; real-time automated tooling, assembly, and welding of truck axles.

In addition to his technical achievements, Ron has distinguished himself in the creation and building of companies.

Highlights of his career include:

  • Founded 8 companies: 2 manufacturing, 2 service, 2 franchises, 1 not-for-profit, and 1 consulting.
  • Recruited an elite team of venture capitalists, raised $30M.
  • Built a team and grew his first company to $11M in 4 years.
  • Built a consortium of 12 organizations: 2 universities, 2 Government labs and 8 companies that won $25M in Government grants.
  • Financed and built a $35M not-for-profit State-funded technical institute.
  • Negotiated a leveraged buyout of a robot manufacturing company that sold $20M in orders.
  • Built a financial service business franchise in Ohio and Indiana.
  • Reorganized and grew a system integration company from $1M to $14M using team-based management principles.
